You don't need a USB audio interface to start recording

That's the conversation most people arrive at after watching too many YouTube setup tours. Before long, they're comparing audio interfaces, wondering whether they need phantom power, researching condenser microphones, and downloading plugin trials — all before they've recorded a single thing.

For podcasts, vocal run-throughs, and guitar demos at home, you can get decent recordings with two pieces of gear: a dynamic microphone and the right lead. The rest is useful eventually, but it's not where you start.

Dynamic vs condenser: the one decision that actually matters

The choice between a dynamic and a condenser microphone is the most important one in this whole setup, and it's rarely explained plainly.

A condenser microphone in an untreated room (a bedroom, study corner, or spare room in an ordinary Australian home) will faithfully reproduce every flutter echo and air conditioning hum. A dynamic microphone, because of its lower sensitivity and tighter pickup pattern, mostly captures what's directly in front of it and ignores the room.

That's why radio studios use dynamic microphones. That's why most podcast setups are dynamic. For a budget recording corner that isn't acoustically treated, it's the right starting point.

Any electrical interference picked up along the cable cancels itself out at the destination. Longer cable runs don't degrade the signal the way unbalanced cables do.

1. Dynamic microphone — this is the quality ceiling. A good mic into a modest interface sounds better than a cheap mic into an expensive one.

2. XLR cable matched to your destination — buy this before the microphone arrives, not after.

3. Closed-back headphones for monitoring — so you can hear playback without the microphone picking up speaker output. Any over-ear closed-back pair works.

4. Audio interface — worth adding once you want lower latency, multiple inputs, or 48V phantom power for upgrading to a condenser. Not the first thing to buy.

Position the microphone 10–20 cm from the source, angled slightly off-axis (about 15 degrees away from pointing directly at your mouth or guitar sound hole). This reduces plosive sounds — the hard pop on "p" and "b" — without noticeably changing the recorded tone.
