The last two decisions on the list
Most first-time PC builders spend a disproportionate amount of time on the CPU, GPU and RAM — reading benchmarks, watching comparisons, building spreadsheets. By the time the build list gets to the case and power supply, decision fatigue sets in. These parts start to look like commodities: find something that fits the budget, tick the boxes, move on.
It's a routine mistake, and it costs money not once but twice — once at the register when you buy something that just scrapes by, and again when an upgrade you weren't expecting forces you to replace the case or PSU before the component you actually wanted to upgrade.
A mid-range CPU might get swapped after three years. A GPU after two. The case and PSU quietly outlast both those cycles. Choose them poorly and they become the constraint that shapes every future upgrade — a case too small for a longer GPU, or a PSU without enough headroom for a better card. Choose them well and you won't think about them again until the whole system is due for retirement.
What to look for in a case
Choosing a case is really four decisions bundled into one.
Form factor. ATX mid-tower is the right starting point for a first build. It accommodates standard ATX and Micro-ATX motherboards, fits larger CPU coolers and GPUs up to 330–350mm, and leaves enough interior space to route cables without a fight. Full-tower takes up floor space most people don't have. Mini-ITX is compact but makes the build process significantly harder, and the thermal and upgrade trade-offs aren't worth it when you're learning. Airflow. Heat is the slow-motion threat to PC components. A case that breathes well keeps temperatures lower, lets fans run at quieter speeds, and extends component longevity. The front panel matters most — mesh or perforated panels allow intake air to flow freely. Solid front panels look clean but choke airflow. Check that the case has mounting points for at least two 120mm intake fans and a rear exhaust. GPU clearance. The GPU you buy today won't be the same tier as the one you upgrade to in three years. What to look for in a PSU
The power supply is the one component every other part depends on. A failing GPU affects the display. A failing CPU slows the machine. A failing PSU can damage the components it feeds — and a marginal unit that never outright fails can still cause crashes, instability, and component stress that's difficult to trace.
Two things decide whether a PSU earns its place.
Wattage and headroom. A mid-range gaming build — Ryzen 5 or Core i5, paired with an RTX 4060 or RX 7600 tier GPU — peaks under 350W at full load. A 500W PSU provides comfortable headroom, runs near its efficiency sweet spot, and leaves room for additional drives and fans. If you're planning a higher-tier GPU upgrade within a year or two, starting at 650W means you won't need to replace the PSU when you add the card. 80 Plus rating. This certification measures efficiency — the percentage of power drawn from the wall that actually reaches your components, versus what's lost as heat. 80 Plus Bronze (85% at half load) is the practical minimum for a gaming PC.
