What to Check Before You Buy
Bandwidth: USB 3.2 vs USB 3.0Not all USB-C hubs pass data at the same speed. A hub rated at USB 3.2 Gen 1 transfers at up to 5Gbps; Gen 2 reaches 10Gbps. For most office tasks and photo imports, 5Gbps is more than enough. If you're editing 4K video from an external SSD through the hub, Gen 2 is worth the extra outlay.
Bus-powered limitsCompact hubs draw power from your laptop's USB-C port. Under heavy load — four devices plugged in and the hub driving a monitor — you may notice a modest reduction in charge speed. That's normal and not a sign the hub is faulty. The fix: look for a hub with a dedicated USB-C PD pass-through rated at 60W or higher.
The cable matters tooThe USB-C cable between your laptop and the hub carries power, data, and video simultaneously. A cheap cable can throttle data speeds or reduce the charge rate without any warning.
